Home Depot Apologizes for Racist Tweet

Home Depot racist tweetGetty Images NEW YORK -- Home improvement maker Home Depot (HD) on Thursday apologized for a tweet that showed a picture of two African-American drummers with a person in a gorilla mask in between them and asked: "Which drummer is not like the others?" The tweet, from Home Depot's official Twitter account, @HomeDepot, was part of a "College Gameday" college football promotion on ESPN. It was quickly pulled, but not before people took screen shots of it and it was widely circulated on social media. NBC and CNBC, among others, reported on the Tweet.

Home Depot said Friday that it has fired the person and outside agency that was responsible for the tweet, but didn't disclose their names. "We have zero tolerance for anything so stupid and offensive," said Stephen Holmes, spokesman for the Atlanta-based company. Holmes said the company is "closely" reviewing its social media procedures to determine "how this could have happened, and how to ensure it never happens again." Allen Adamson, managing director of branding firm Landor Associates, said the tweet is "the worst possible message Home Depot can send out ... even if it gets attributed to stupidity." "In a Twitter world where everyone can see everything instantly I think you'll see more rather than less of this because people tweet before they think," Adamson said. Home Depot isn't the first company to get in trouble for offensive tweets. In September, AT&T (T) apologized for a Twitter message that commemorated the Sept. 11 attacks because of complaints the company was using the event to promote itself. And KitchenAid (WHR) faced backlash in 2012 when one of its employees mistakenly posted a tweet about President Barack Obama's grandmother death on the official KitchenAid Twitter account. Barclays fell into the capital shortfall trap along with RBS and Lloyds (NYSE: LYG  ) . Lloyds, especially, is going to be watching how smoothly Barclays' new issuance goes. The bank reported stronger than expected earnings last week, and the success has opened up the possibility that the U.K. government may be able to start selling off its stake. The Barclays' issuance could provide a good temperature check of the market, and help move that action along.

Swiss financials Credit Suisse (CS) and UBS as well as U.K. banks like Lloyd's (LYG) have delivered returns significantly better than the S&P 500 this year. Optimism regarding consumer and business lending has lifted shares, and the trend looks to continue in 2014. If you're a believer in the EU recovery, financial stocks are a great way to be at the center of an economic turnaround.

Yes, JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) has the largest derivatives portfolio of all U.S. banks, and yes, Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) has operations in over 90 countries. Even Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , a bank that, five years later, still struggles to deal with a pre-crisis acquisition spree, ranks among the top performers in the S&P for 2012.

The company has come a long way since the financial crisis and only continues to improve its overall situation. It's balance sheet is healthy, much healthier thanBank of America's (NYSE: BAC  ) . And look what investors in that superbank are facing: the threat of being hit with tens of billions more in payouts as a result of bad mortgage-backed securities issued by its Countrywide Financial unit.

No. I think Warren Buffett usually thinks in terms of the return he can get on a stock. He has mentioned valuations to students before. He doesn't do it very often. Honestly, he doesn't give precise figures of either returns on investment or valuations very often. But he has many times even with Bank of America (BAC) recently talked about the kind of returns he can get in that stock versus everything else. I don't think he comes up with an intrinsic value estimate for something like Bank of America. I think he looks at the earning power. Also, if you look at some of the intrinsic value estimates Buffett has given in the past for companies, they seem to be closely connected to demonstrated earning power.

This, however, is unlikely to sate the appetite of most people calling for the jailing of bankers. Their rage was not aimed at small community bankers, but the big boys running financial institutions like Lehman Brothers,Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) , andCitigroup. How is it, they wonder, that these giant banks brought the U.S. financial system to its knees and nobody did anything jail-able?

Regional banks seem to be the trailblazers here, while larger banks like Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) give mobile services away for freeto their customers -- and JPMorgan, at least, plans to keep it that way for the foreseeable future. Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) is the only big bank to dabble in assessing mobile fees, doing so for premium services such as emergency bill pay services, and bank-to-bank transfers.

Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) conducts business in the United States residential mortgage market and the global securities market. The Company operates in three segments: Single-family Guarantee, Investments, and Multifamily. The Single-family Guarantee segment reflects results from the Company's single-family credit guarantee activities. The Investments segment reflects results from the Company's investment, funding and hedging activities. The Multifamily segment reflects results from the Company's investment (both purchases and sales), securitization, and guarantee activities in multifamily mortgage loans and securities. The Company conducts its operations in the United States and its territories.

Single-Family Guarantee Segment

In the Company Single-family Guarantee segment, it purchases single-family mortgage loans originated by the Company seller/servicers in the primary mortgage market. The Company uses the mortgage securitization process to package the purchased mortgage loans into guaranteed mortgage-related securities. The Company guarantees the payment of principal and interest on the mortgage-related security in exchange for management and guarantee fees. The Company customers are lenders in the primary mortgage market that originate mortgages for homeowners. These lenders include mortgage banking companies, commercial banks, savings banks, community banks, credit unions, Housing Finance Agency (HFAs), and savings and loan associations. The Company customers also service loans in its single-family credit guarantee portfolio.

Mortgage securitization is a process, by which the Company purchase mortgage loans that lenders originate, and pool these loans into mortgage securities that are sold in global capital markets. The United States residential mortgage market consists of a primary mortgage market that links homebuyers and lenders and a secondary mortgage market that links lenders and investors. The Company part! icipates in the secondary mortgage market by purchasing mortgage loans and mortgage-related securities for investment and by issuing guaranteed mortgage-related securities. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Lisa Abramowicz]

Mortgage financiers Fannie Mae (FNMA) and Freddie Mac (FMCC) were placed into government conservatorship, insurer American International Group Inc. agreed to a U.S. takeover to avert collapse, Merrill Lynch & Co. was compelled to sell itself to Bank of America Corp. and automaker General Motors Corp. faced insolvency.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Interestingly, though, this analysis doesn't mention an important factor: Increasingly over the past decade, major mortgage lenders haven't held onto their loans but rather have sold them on to government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae (NASDAQOTCBB: FNMA  ) and Freddie Mac (NASDAQOTCBB: FMCC  ) . During the housing boom, mortgage lenders Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) didn't perform as well as they did because they were securing particularly high margins on their mortgage loans. Rather, they collected transaction-based income by immediately reselling conforming loans to Fannie and Freddie, often retaining streams of income from risk-free mortgage-servicing rights without keeping any liability for potential loan default. Even now, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) relies on strength in mortgage-related income, and decreases in refinancing activity pose a threat to income growth in future quarters -- although unlike many of its peers, Wells has actually retained a good portion of its loans on its own books.

Repairman Jack is sometimes referred to as "an urban mercenary".  He is a little like Zorro or the Lone Ranger saving the innocent and outwitting the bad guys.  "Repairman" is a metaphor that Jack reluctantly embraced.  What he fixes are situations where basically decent people need help, but cannot go to the authorities.  Suppose, for example, someone steals an historic sword from you.  Jack might help you recover it.  The authorities, on the other hand, are under the impression that it really belongs in a museum.  Jack tries to keep a very low profile.  When the fix is complete he does not want someone to say "Who was that masked man ?".  He would prefer "WTF?" The other difference is that Jack charges for his services – handsomely.

Jack lives in contemporary Manhattan.  If you need his services, you will have to luck into a referral.  The other thing you need to know about Jack is that he is a critical part in a much larger story, which is referred to as The Secret History of The World.  Most of the events of history for the last several thousand years are the result of a struggle that many people have intimations of, but few have the faintest idea of its true nature.  Our world is a very small part in a great struggle. It is not the eternal struggle between good and evil.  It is the very long struggle between not so bad and incredibly awful.  Jack has a special role to play in the struggle, but he is being dragged kicking and screaming into it.  His preference would be to just take care of himself and the few people he cares about.  It is really annoying to him that in order to do that he might have to save the world.

At the Close: S&P 500 Drops Most Since August; Goldman Sachs Sinks on Legal Concerns

Stocks tumbled today, reversing early morning optimism brought on by a stronger-than-expected U.S. GDP number and a surprise ECB rate cut.

Reuters

The S&P 500 dropped 1.3% to 1,747.15–its largest fall since August 27–while the Dow Jones Industrials fell 1% to 15,593.89–its biggest drop in almost a month. Among the stocks dragging the market down: Goldman Sachs (GS), which fell 2.4% to $159.64 after it said an investigation into its mortgage-bond business could boost its legal costs, AT&T (T), which dropped 2% to $35.11 after it acknowledged charging the US government for access to customer phone records, and WPX Energy (WPX), which fell 13% to $18.65 after releasing disappointing results. Just two Dow components–International Business Machines (IBM) and EI Du Pont De Nemours (DD)–finished the day in the black.

Why the sudden impulse to sell? Blame the ECB, says CRT Group’s David Ader. He writes:

Today's monetary policy surprise was credited for a broader risk-off move across asset classes with domestic equities selling off sharply and Japanese and European stocks taking a hit as well.  The yen was solidly bid after breaking to new cheaps in the immediate wake of the ECB. The bulk of the day's price action was consistent with a market caught on the wrong side of the central bank decision, a move resembling September's price action that followed the FOMC's no-taper announcement.  All of this suggests attention was focused on overseas events, leaving limited interest or focus on setting up for Friday's employment report.

Tomorrow, the focus should be back on the U.S., where October payrolls will finally be released. Capital Economics’ Paul Ashworth tells investors what to expect:

The Federal government shutdown is unlikely to have had a major bearing on payrolls in October. But it will probably have reduced the household measure of employment and pushed the unemployment rate up. The payroll survey counts the number of people paid during the reference week (6th-12th), so because Federal government workers affected by the shutdown (1st-17th) are receiving back pay, they will be counted as employed. Since the knock-on effect on the private sector was probably small, we estimate that payrolls rose by 140,000 last month. But in the household survey, those government workers will be classed as unemployed. As such, a fall in household employment probably pushed the unemployment rate up, perhaps to 7.5% from 7.2%. Since government employees have returned to work, the fall in employment and rise in the unemployment rate should be reversed in November.

Will tomorrow’s report reverse today’s losses?

Best Blue Chip Stocks To Watch For 2014

LONDON -- Global premium-drinks company Diageo (LSE: DGE  ) (NYSE: DEO  ) has been a stellar investment over the years. Does this big blue chip have much further to rise, or are its growth days over? Let's have a look.

Track record
Diageo has delivered a storming performance for investors. In the last year, its shares have risen 30%. In the last five years, the shares have doubled. However, there are signs that this huge outperformance may be over. In the last three months, shares in this super-brewer have trailed the FTSE 100. While the FTSE is up 3.9%, Diageo is only 1.1% ahead.

What cannot be in doubt is Diageo's quality as a company. Shareholder dividends have been increasing every year since 1998. In fact, the payout is up nearly fourfold in that time. Sales and earnings per share have also increased year on year for the last five years. Diageo is one of the U.K.'s most successful companies.

Valuation
Go back two years, and Diageo shares were trading around 1,300 pence. The company had just completed a year in which it earned 68.3 pence per share and declared a dividend of 38.1 pence. That put the shares on a historic price-to-earnings ratio of 19 and a past yield of 2.9%. In May 2011, shares in Diageo traded at 15.7 times the full-year EPS. The 2011 dividend equated to a 3.1% yield.

A recent report from research group KPMG, and commissioned by Philip Morris (NYSE: PM  ) , revealed that while total consumption of cigarettes in Europe has fallen in recent years, the illegal contraband and counterfeit trade has grown from 8.3% of total consumption to 11.1%. The report suggests that the high profitability and low risk of penalties attracts organized crime, which can use the trade as a cash cow to fund far more objectionable activities. An ad from British American Tobacco (NYSEMKT: BTI  ) goes as far as to suggest that the trade could even be indirectly funding terrorism.

Imperial trades cheaply and pays a great, sustainable and for-ever-growing 4.5% cash dividend yield. The company's 2014 10.4 times P/E multiple represents a 40% discount to what most European consumer staples sell for. Besides, the owner of brands such as Davidoff and Gauloises, trades at a much more conservative level than its direct tobacco peers. Philip Morris International (PM) and British American Tobacco (BTI) sell for 2014 15 and 14.2 times earnings, respectively.

    MasterCard's share of electronic payments
This represents the share of the 15% of transactions that are already in electronic form. On the one hand, according to the Nilson Report competitor Visa (NYSE: V  ) holds about 63% share versus MasterCard's 31%. But when we consider that MasterCard's network has the capacity to handle more than 160 million transactions per hour, and only runs at about 80% capacity per day, there is obviously room to grow, and that is what management is doing. CFO Martina Hund-Mejean put it bluntly: "Look, we are looking at ourselves as a growth company, and obviously all of our investments that we are doing are really pointed to make sure that the top line continues to grow."

Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) CEO Larry Ellison will use just about any excuse he can to brag about the company he founded. He discovered a new path, as Oracle used IBM’s (NYSE: IBM) earnings release to claim that the century old corporation had fallen to the No.3 spot in global software sales. If so, that would mean Oracle now holds the No.2 spot behind Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT). The change in positions says a great deal about the power of Oracle’s enterprise customer base, and the erosion of some of IBM’s core businesses.

Barclays Capital reported on Monday that it has cut its rating on International Business Machines Corp. (IBM).

The firm has downgraded IBM from “Overweight” to “Equal-Weight,” and has cut its price target from $215 to $190. This new price target suggests a 15% increase from the stock’s current price of $182.50.

An analyst from the firm noted: t is increasingly clear to us that investors will evaluate IBM on cash flow more than earnings until revenue starts to grow meaningfully. As a result, we are moving our rating for IBM to Equal Weight from Overweight even though shares have been down over the past several months. The mainframe atalyst’ has passed and positive benefits from analytics seem to be offset by secular shits to SaaS and Cloud, which seem to adversely impact all of IBM’s segments in some way. We have recently performed several surveys that show the disruptive impact of cloud and SaaS are only in the early innings and are set to be more disruptive in 2014 for our whole sector./p>

BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY  ) still has a grip on those subsectors, but the Canadian smartphone maker is slipping.

Feeling Sick: Tenet Healthcare Plunges 10% on Earnings, Guidance

Feeling stick to your stomach? You might be a shareholder of Tenet Healthcare (THC).

Shares of Tenet Healthcare have plunged 9.9% to $43.50 today at 2:30 p.m. after the hospital operator reported weaker than forecast earnings and lowered guidance.

The Associated Press has the details:

The company’s revenue increased 8.4 percent to $2.41 billion from $2.22 billion in the prior-year period as emergency department visits and surgeries increased.

The company’s net income was $28 million, or 27 cents per share, down from $40 million, or 37 cents per share, in the same period last year. Excluding one-time acquisition, restructuring and other charges the company would have earned $46 million, or 45 cents per share.

That was just below the average estimate of analysts polled by FactSet, who were looking for 46 cents per share on sales of $2.39 billion.

Deutsche Bank says Tenet is still a buy, despite the disappointment:

Q3 results a slight miss; lowered Q4 guidance sets early expectations w/[Vanguard Health Systems]. THC’s Q3 EBITDA of $288M fell ~3% short of consensus $296M as slightly higher expense growth and continued inpt volume softness led to a slight miss. While most Q3 operating metrics were within tempered investor expectations, we believe THC’s Q4 EBITDA guidance of $400M-$450M (vs. $475M-$500M for consensus estimates w/VHS) sets the stage for a lower launching point for THC+VHS. With Q4 EBITDA guidance pointing to ~$50M below our prior est at the midpoint, we are trimming Q4 and adjusting 2014 by ~$140M to $2.16B. Despite the est revision, we still consider the risk/reward to be compelling and reiterate Buy. Our PT moves to $60 from $65 on the lower estimates

Tenets plunge has helped drag other healthcare stocks lower. Community Health (CYH) has dropped 3.6% to $42.21, HCA Holdings (HCA) has fallen 2.1% to $46.72 and Universal Health Services (UHS) is off 1% at $80.59.

Hot Safest Companies To Watch In Right Now

On the face of it, figuring out how a bank makes money is a pretty straightforward affair. A bank earns a spread on the money it lends out from the money it takes in as a deposit. The net interest margin (NIM), which most banks report quarterly, represents this spread, which is simply the difference between what it earns on loans versus what it pays out as interest on deposits. This, of course, gets much more complicated given the dizzying array of credit products and interest rates used to determine the rate eventually charged for loans. Below is an overview of how a bank determines the interest rate for consumers and business loans.

It All Starts with Interest Rate Policy
Banks are generally free to determine the interest rate they will pay for deposits and charge for loans, but they must take the competition into account, as well as the market levels for numerous interest rates and Fed policies. The United States Federal Reserve influences interest rates by setting certain rates, stipulating bank reserve requirements, and buying and selling isk-free(a term used to indicate that these are among the safest bonds in existence) U.S. Treasury and agency securities to impact the deposits that banks hold at the Fed. This is referred to as monetary policy and is intended to influence economic activity as well as the health and safety of the overall banking system. Most market-based countries employ a similar type of monetary policy in their economies.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Tyler Crowe]

But there is one company that straddles the fence of NOC and investment opportunity and could be a major player in this surging oil trend: Petrobras (NYSE: PBR  ) . The state-run oil company of Brazil is required to have a 30% operator stake in every well drilled in offshore Brazil. This could be a huge benefit for a region that some estimate to have as many as 50 billion barrels of recoverable oil. Petrobras doesn't seem to be wasting any time taking advantage of its leader position for offshore exploration, either. The company plans to spend $237 billion in the next four years to make this happen. If the company can deliver on these lofty production goals both on time and within budget -- two major issues that have plagued the company in the past -- its position in Brazil offshore could mean promising times ahead for this stock.

Think about it: 10 years ago the Gulf of Mexico was thought to be headed for oblivion, only to be revived mightily by technology that opened up the deepwater. Activity in Brazil was minimal, and now Diamond Offshore has a baker's dozen rigs working there, most in the deepwater and ultra-deepwater for Petrobras (NYSE: PBR  ) .

    And the winner is ...
It all depends on your definition of "winning: to determine who came out on top of this auction. If your definition is most blocks won, then Petrobras (NYSE: PBR  ) took that prize running away. The company spent $268 million for rights on 35 blocks. The next closest in terms of bids won was OGX, which secured 13 blocks in the entire auction. It shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone that Petrobras was the most active in this auction. Not only is Petrobras Brazil's largest oil company, but it also just recently completed an $11 billion bond issuance, the largest corporate bond sale from an emerging market ever. Some of that money was probably pre-planned for both this auction and the next Brazilian auction to happen in October. This move will further secure Petrobras' position as the largest oil producer in the country.

As much as I love an underdog, Nike (NYSE: NKE  ) is still the king of the roost -- and for a reason. While I've picked Under Armour (NYSE: UA  ) as a Tier 1 investment, that doesn't mean that Nike's broken. In fact, you may do well buying both.

Fluor Corporation (FLR) is one of the world leading heavy construction and engineering firms. I don’t want to imply that this is a bad company because it is actually a very good one. However, Fluor has divisions including Oil & Gas, Industrial Infrastructure, Government, Global Services and Power. Virtually all of them are seeing limited spending as a result of the global slowdown and reduced government spending around the world. The stock is up more than 23% this year, but earnings are actually down on flat revenues. Analysts have been lowering their estimates for the rest of this year as well as 2014, and the stock is currently rated as a by Portfolio Grader. When the economy recovers, I expect will see this company’s fundamentals improve substantially … but until that happens investors should avoid the stock.

South America has become an unsettled region to mine in. Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM  ) had its Peruvian Conga project brought to a short stop over environmental concerns, while Vale (NYSE: VALE  ) recently abandoned an Argentinean project because of the country's policies.Costs for Pascua-Lama have ballooned over the past decade and now stand at about $8.5 billion, putting it at risk of becoming an albatross around the miner's neck even before the court decision. Barrick even resorted to bringing in engineering specialist Fluor (NYSE: FLR  ) to expand the scope of its project management before the court order.

Will Al Qaeda's Legion of Doom Destroy America's Economy?

Surgically implanted bombs, the most serious threats the U.S. has seen in years, and Al-Qaeda "chatter" similar to what was seen right before 9/11 are just some of the threats U.S lawmakers say prompted increased security, and the closure of embassies across the Middle East, recently.

The U.S. State Department also issued a global travel warning, saying that terrorist organizations are aggressively focusing on kidnapping, torturing, and bombing Americans traveling abroad. Moreover, this all has the ability to affect America's shaky economy. But there are ways to prepare -- just in case.

The increase in terrorist activity
In the past few weeks, the U.S. closed 22 U.S. embassies across the Middle East and North Africa, because of "credible threats" that terrorist organizations are planning a massive attack. So far, U.S. intelligence agencies haven't stated where, or when, these attacks will take place, but they did say the threats appeared to originate in Yemen, indicating a high probability they're Al-Qaeda-related.

Further, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, told ABC that Al-Qaeda's "operatives are in place" and that it'd be a "major attack." And Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the lead on the House Homeland Security subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence, told ABC that "Al Qaeda is in many ways stronger than it was before 9/11, because it's mutated and it spread and it can come at us from different directions."

What to prepare for
Luckily, lawmakers are taking these threats seriously. But, considering that on Sept. 10, 2001, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) closed at 9,605.51, and on Sept. 17, the day the Dow reopened, it closed at 8,920.70, a 7.13% decrease -- and then it didn't recover for a month -- there are a few things investors should keep in mind.

First ...
A terrorist attack, particularly a massive one, could have an emotional impact on the market. The Dow dropped 7.13% on Sept. 17, but it finished the week down 14.3% -- the largest single-week drop in U.S. history. This drop was probably exacerbated by the attack's occurrence at the heart of the U.S. financial system, though leading reports indicate that location wasn't solely responsible for this decline. In addition, while initial reports indicated that the Sept. 11 attacks slowed GDP, later Congressional Research service reports state that GDP slowed before Sept. 11, and was not a result of the terrorist attack. This finding indicates that the sudden decrease in the market was largely emotionally driven. Consequently, a short-term drop in the market is possible following a major attack.

Second ...
A surge in oil prices is probable. One of the reasons the U.S. closed embassies in the Middle East and North Africa is that these areas are likely spots for terrorist attacks; particularly the Arabian Peninsula. That directly affects the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or OPEC.

In 2012, petroleum net imports accounted for 40% of the total petroleum used in the United States. Of that amount, 55% was imported from OPEC, which includes Middle Eastern countries such as Iraq, Libya, and Saudi Arabia. In fact, in 2012, 18% of U.S. imported petroleum came from Saudi Arabia.

Further, in July, OPEC crude output hit a four-month low because of the conflict in Libya and Iraq and had a direct effect on July's gas prices. According to AAA, July gas prices rose $0.14 per gallon because of increased demand and unrest in the Middle East. Oil price increases are usually good for ETFs such as the United States Oil Fund (NYSEMKT: USO  ) , and PowerShares DB Oil Fund (NYSEMKT: DBO  ) , but a rise in oil prices can also be detrimental to the economy.

Recently, The World Bank Development Research Group Environment and Energy Team analyzed a wide body of research on oil prices' impact on the economy. They concluded that an increase in oil price negatively affects global GDP but is especially damaging to emerging and developing countries, such as China, because of their reliance on oil-intensive manufacturing industries. Consequently, a rise in oil prices, following an attack, could negatively affect the United States' slowly recovering economy -- and the global economy.

Third ...
As Secretary of State John Kerry said, "Deploying diplomats today is much cheaper than deploying troops tomorrow." The Middle East is a hotbed for terrorist activity, and one way America fosters diplomacy is through its embassies. Consequently, they make ideal targets for terrorist attacks. However, a physical assault on an embassy isn't the most effective way a terrorist group could attack the United States. And I think they know that.

In 2009, under the direction of Al-Qaeda, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the "underwear bomber," tried to blow up a flight headed to Detroit. Following the failed attack, the U.S. deployed L-3 Communications Holdings' body scanners that had a three-year initial estimated cost of $3 billion (since reduced).

Last September, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters successfully targeted six banks, including Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase. This attack, along with others, spurred the U.S. to invest heavily in cybersecurity initiatives such as the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center -- which partners with Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) and its subcontractor CACI international (NYSE: CACI  ) . In fact, analysts expect that while defense budgets are cut, cybersecurity-related spending will  increase.

Pre-9/11, the Congressional Budget Office stated: "Under current policies, total surpluses would accumulate to an estimated $2 trillion over the next five years and $5.6 trillion over the coming decade. Such large surpluses would be sufficient by 2006 to pay off all debt held by the public that will be available for redemption." Then 9/11 happened.

America is a defense superpower, and Al-Qaeda doesn't stand a chance in a frontal attack. But through their past actions, they've cost the U.S. trillions. Fortunately, or not so fortunately depending on how you look at it, the U.S. has already invested heavily in counterterrorism measures, so a sharp increase in defense spending is unlikely. Still, an attack by Al-Qaeda on the U.S. is likely to spur defense spending -- even if we are in the middle of sequestration. Just look at what happened following North Korea's missile launch: Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel stated that the U.S. would be shifting "resources" to boost funding to Lockheed Martin's Aegis missile defense system, and beefing up missile defense -- to the tune of $1 billion.

A grim wrap
The Department of State believes that now to the end of August is when the terrorists plan to attack. But the good news is that for now, this is all still hypothetical -- and hopefully it remains that way. But if a "major attack" does occur, the best thing you can do as a Foolish investor is to look at what's happened in the past, and not panic. The market may go nuts, oil prices could increase, and it could have an overall impact on the economy, but I don't think it'll be long-lived. And as Fools invest for the long run, the best thing you can do is stock up while the market's low.

Sept. 11 had a major impact on the stock market and the economy, but one thing hasn't changed: Dividend stocks can make you rich. While they don't garner the notability of high-flying growth stocks, they're also less likely to crash and burn. And over the long term, the compounding effect of the quarterly payouts, as well as their growth, adds up faster than most investors imagine. With this in mind, our analysts sat down to identify the absolute best of the best when it comes to rock-solid dividend stocks, drawing up a list in this free report of nine that fit the bill.
