Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Heads to the Apennine Mountains

Adding another big name to its already-impressive lineup, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (NASDAQ: GMCR  )  just announced a multiyear agreement with Italy's Lavazza brand. While the name brand is a nice addition to the family, the fact that Lavazza focuses on espresso is an even bigger win. Green Mountain's Keurig machines have become the de facto brand for single-serve brewed coffee, but the company has had less luck making inroads to the land of pressure-brewed espresso. Lavazza offers Green Mountain a new avenue to success.

Lavazza brings a roaster's background to the partnership, and it doesn't operate retail locations. While the initial product development will focus on brewed coffee for the Keurig line, there's no doubt that espresso is the long-term play for Green Mountain. Lavazza and Green Mountain have so far announced four lines available starting in the fall of this year, all focused on brewed coffee. That, though, is a market that Green Mountain is already dominating. A much more important market is the world of single-serve espresso -- a world that's, so far, largely unexplored.

The expansion of espresso
This isn't the first time that Lavazza and Green Mountain have joined forces. In 2012, the companies co-branded a brewer called the Keurig Rivo. That system has a stronger pump, which allows it to brew espresso and steam milk. The Rivo doesn't get much coverage from Green Mountain in its investor materials, in all likelihood because it's not growing at anything like an impressive rate.

A new range of Lavazza pods could help boost sales of that machine and reach into new homes and offices, or help the company double down on existing Keurig owners who also want to brew espresso. Right now, the biggest competition for the market isn't very big.

Although Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) produces a Verismo brewer, which brews coffee and espresso, the machine has failed to take off, although it did well this holiday season. The relatively open competitive space means that any big move -- like this Lavazza agreement -- could swing large portions of the potential customer base.

Doubling down on Lavazza
Instead of tying in with a new company, Green Mountain decided to go after the espresso market with Lavazza. It's the right call, as Lavazza already has a 5% stake in Green Mountain -- taken back in 2010 when the companies first discussed a jointly designed machine -- and Lavazza is a major worldwide brand. In 2011, the business generated $1.7 billion in worldwide sales.

Even in the U.S., the company has a wide distribution, appearing in grocery stores, department stores, and specialty shops. Globally, Lavazza operates in 90 countries and sells billions of cups of coffee annually. Due to its different focus, the company is nowhere near the scale of Starbucks, which generated $14.9 billion in sales last year, but it has the chance to help Green Mountain round out its offerings without building even stronger ties with Howard Schultz & Co.

As Green Mountain has grown, it's built up a tentative truce with Starbucks, which sees the value in having its product more widely distributed. Since that agreement still has more than four years left on it, there's no telling what Starbucks' brewer offering will look like by the end. Better for Green Mountain to tie up with Lavazza, which will definitely not be offering a competing brewer, than to get even further in with Starbucks. This deal looks like an excellent move for Green Mountain.

For auto loans, debt balance and number of accounts are also increasing, while auto loan delinquencies are declining. That makes automakers great stocks to buy. Trucks and used cars are selling best right now, so I choose the all-American Ford (F) which has regained its footing post-financial crisis, and the king of used car retailers, AutoNation (AN).

In a recent interview right here on GuruFocus, Tom Gayner of Markel (MKL) had a few things to say about CarMax (KMX). This prompted me to give the company a closer look. What follows is a business analysis. We will save considerations of stock analysis, such as price, for a later discussion.

I think that is a business that will continue to grow. I don't see any reason why you can't have a Carmax in a lot of towns way beyond what they're talking about right now. I think being the number one dealer, and having the number one market share in used car arena gives you great information on what transaction prices are. Then you work on the process to be as quick and as cost efficient in fixing the car and getting it sold, and have the confidence from customers when you offer warranties on the products. Those factors create a virtuous cycle. The more you do, the more you can do, the better the pricing is, the more the customers like you, the more your brand matters. The company will be around for a good long time. The management has done a very good job of creating the system and executing it.
CarMax was formed as a unit of Circuit City in 1993 and was spun off in 2002. Used-car sales account for about 80% of revenue. Competitors include, but certainly are not limited to, AutoNation (AN) and America's Car-Mart (CRMT) as well as private party sellers.

Part of this year-over-year growth is attributed to the 10 new stores opened throughout the year -- the most since 2008. As part of this growth, SG&A costs rose more than 10% to $1 billion. Marketing campaigns are incredibly important for the company to stay competitive with peers such as AutoNation (NYSE: AN  ) , but investors need to keep an eye on these SG&A increases to make sure they are yielding an appropriate return on the sales front.

    Basic guidelines
In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Integrated Silicon Solution (Nasdaq: ISSI  ) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Integrated Silicon Solution doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, not so great. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 7.0%, and inventory increased 43.7%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue grew 20.0%, and inventory grew 43.7%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks OK but not great. Revenue dropped 1.8%, and inventory dropped 0.8%.

    Friday's Volume: 1.16 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 250,767

    Volume % Change: 396%

Shares of VPRT jumped higher on Friday after the company reported a profit topping Wall Street expectations and beat the revenue expectation.

From a technical perspective, VPRT broke out here above some near-term overhead resistance at $53.16 with heavy upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last four months, with shares moving higher from its low of $36.51 to its intraday high on Friday of $55.25. During that uptrend, shares of VPRT have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of VRPT within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if VRPT manages to take out $55.25 to its three-year high at $56.25.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in VPRT as long as it's trending above $53.16 or above $52 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 250,767 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then VRPT will set up to enter new 52-week- and three-year-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $60 to $65.

I didn't realize that you also look at this type of company.

Looking through some investor presentations, I not really convinced that they can maintain current growth rates of 20%.

Their production facilities are all based in high cost developed nations.

Why could this not be copied in Asia?

I just don't see the moat.

Current valuation assumes double digit performance for several years, one small dip and the stock dives, no margin of safety here...

You bring up an interesting point about cost. But I not sure how much a small price differential matters to customers in this kind of business. I would have to look into that. Any logistical problems would lose you a customer. Also, that assumes the lowest labor costs lead to the lowest production costs I not sure that true in the printing industry.

Ie had business cards printed. And screwed up (not by Vistaprint). As long as the price was reasonable, I woulde gone with he best And I woulde had no way to know who he bestwas other than the most recognized name. Actually, I remember that being the problem when I needed some business cards, company stationary, etc., printed. I had to visit a couple websites. Look at them. Try to guess which was the best. Or at least decent. It was like getting a plumber or something. I had very little ability to separate the good guys from the bad guys. I wasn spending time thinking about price many printers had prices that seemed awfully similar to me. Instead I was just overwhelmed how frustratingly identical all the choices were.

I had no way to make an informed decision.

I can certainly imagine ways of saving money. But I really doubt labor is a good place to try to find those savings. Small orders to small custome

Fair Value: In calculating fair value, I consider the NPV MMA Differential Fair Value along with these four calculations of fair value, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Avg. High Yield Price
    2. 20-Year DCF Price
    3. Avg. P/E Price
    4. Graham Number

GWW is trading at a premium to all four valuations above. The stock is trading at a 10.0% premium to its calculated fair value of $219.95. GWW did not earn any Stars in this section.

Dividend Analytical Data: In this section there are three possible Stars and three key metrics, see page 2 of the linked PDF for a detailed description:

    1. Free Cash Flow Payout
    2. Debt To Total Capital
    3. Key Metrics
    4. Dividend Growth Rate
    5. Years of Div. Growth
    6. Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15%

GWW earned three Stars in this section for 1.), 2.) and 3.) above. A Star was earned since the Free Cash Flow payout ratio was less than 60% and there were no negative Free Cash Flows over the last 10 years. The stock earned a Star as a result of its most recent Debt to Total Capital being less than 45%. GWW earned a Star for having an acceptable score in at least two of the four Key Metrics measured.

Rolling 4-yr Div. > 15% means that dividends grew on average in excess of 15% for each consecutive 4 year period over the last 10 years (2003-2006, 2004-2007, 2005-2008, etc.) I consider this a key metric since dividends will double every 5 years if they grow by 15%. The company has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1965 and has increased its dividend payments for 42 consecutive years.

Dividend Income vs. MMA: Why would you assume the equity risk and invest in a dividend stock if you could earn a better return in a much less risky money market account (MMA) or Treasury bond? This section compares the earning ability of this stock with a high yield MMA. Two items are considered in this section, see page 2 of the linked

When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. For U.S. Bancorp, a fine of this magnitude is nothing more than a slap on the wrist. However, it is a harbinger for change in how regulators view third-party relationships. Margins matter. The more Jack Henry & Associates (Nasdaq: JKHY  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Jack Henry & Associates's competitive position could be.

Well, I'll give myself an A for effort, but a C- for timing. But, I can bump that C- up to a B+ if my intuition is right as we head into the last few days of 2013 and the first few of 2014. What I'm talking about is a bullish commentary I penned back on November 26th regarding Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ), Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE), and Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG). All three stocks were perking up, and more than that, the buzz surrounding URG, URRE, and URZ was getting louder. More often than not, when the fervor and bullish action and chatter reaches the levels they had reached a month ago, an explosion is right around the corner.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

You know, were it just Uranium Resources, Inc. (NASDAQ:URRE) or just Ur-Energy Inc. (NYSEMKT:URG) or just Uranerz Energy Corp. (NYSEMKT:URZ) making a decided bullish move, I might be able to dismiss it. Similarly, if URZ had only been moving higher for one or two days (or only URG or only URRE), it might be easy to not be impressed. Neither of those situations has been the actual case, however. All three stocks have been moving upward for several days now, quite a bit, on noticeably higher volume. There's something "going on", as it were, and if prior group-wide movements are any clue, it's the kind of move worth tapping into.

WhileAnheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) introduced some fruit-flavored margarita drinks and even Beam offered flavored bourbons to water down the market more, the bigger threat may be coming from the explosive growth being witnessed inhard cider.Brewer Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM  ) rolled out its Angry Orchard cider brand just last year and has already catapulted to the top of the market, surpassing C&C Group's (NASDAQOTH: CCGGY  ) Vermont Hard Cider, the previous market leader.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

At C&C Group's (NASDAQOTH: CCGGY  ) annual meeting earlier this month, it was revealed that when it bought the Hornsby brand two years ago, it paid $25 million and got a 20% share of the market for its efforts. It paid more than 10 times that amount, or about $300 million, for Vermont Hard Cider and its top Woodchuck brand, and got another 42% share of the market. So C&C had almost two-thirds of the cider market all to itself.

  • [By Rich Duprey]

The growth in 2012 follows the success of hard cider sales the year before, which saw a 40% increase. Yet the industry leader remains C&C Group's (NASDAQOTH: CCGGY  ) Vermont Hard Cider, whose Woodchuck Hard Cider has a 41% share of the market, though analysts say Angry Orchard owns nearly half of the on-premises market at the end of the first quarter.

For the past year, social stocks have been a can't-miss investment play, with returns often soaring more than 100%.

Facebook185 Social Stocks We Should Be Talking AboutBut the fact is that there are only a small group of social stocks getting most of the attention, like Facebook (FB), Twitter (TWTR), Pandora (P) and Linked (LNKD). Yet there are many other social stocks worth looking at — and yes, they have done well too.

There are some interesting operators in China benefiting from the huge growth opportunities. At the same time, there are also U.S.-based companies that have essentially been left for dead.

So what are the overlooked social stocks to take a look at? Here are the top three:

YY (YY)

YY 185 Social Stocks We Should Be Talking AboutBased in China, YY (YY) operates a social media platform that allows users to communicate in real-time via voice, text and video. Some of the activities include karaoke, online games, music concerts and even e-learning.

All in all, there appears to be no slowing to the momentum of YY stock. In Q4, revenues soared by 136% to $101.1 million, which was well above the Wall Street consensus of $84.5 million.

And YY is also profitable. The earnings came to 60 cents per share in Q4, beating the analysts' consensus of 46 cents per share.

YY stock is far from cheap, however. The forward price-to-earnings ratio is 39. But in light of the growth, that premium is well deserved. Actually, the multiple is lower than many other social stocks like Pandora, which trades at 85 times earnings and Facebook, which has a multiple of 41.

Zynga (ZNGA)

Zynga185 Social Stocks We Should Be Talking AboutZynga (ZNGA) is one of the few to miss out on the social stocks rally. Since the IPO in late 2011, ZNGA stock is off about 45%. Simply put, many investors have left it for dead.

But the problems may be exaggerated. If anything, ZNGA stock could represent a potential value opportunity for social stocks.

The company now has a new CEO — Don Mattrick — and he's got a tremendous background. In the early 1990s, he sold his game company to Electronic Arts (EA) and then went on to build franchises like Need for Speed, Harry Potter and The Sims. After that, he became the chief of Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox division and pulled off a turnaround.

In light of that success, he could have picked many top companies to work for. But in the end, he thought that ZNGA provided the best opportunity.

So far, he has taken the tough steps of cutting back the headcount. But most importantly, he is focused on strategic issues. For the most part, he is investing in evergreen games like FarmVille, Zynga Poker and Words With Friends. As seen with EA, brands can have a long life, so long as they are continually refreshed.

To make this work, Mattrick made a savvy move to boost the graphics capabilities with the acquisition of NaturalMotion. But the firm also has good mobile chops since it is the creator of the wildly popular Clumsy Ninja.

The turnaround of ZNGA stock  is still in the early stages. But Mattrick has been making the right moves.

Care.com (CRCM)

CareCom185 Social Stocks We Should Be Talking AboutCare.com (CRCM) founder Sheila Lirio Marcelo is part of the "sandwich generation," which means she cares for both her children and parents. Because of this, she had a tough time finding quality care solutions.

So she did something about it: Back in 2006, Marcelo founded Care.com, which is an online community of caregivers. The main services include child care, senior care, special needs care and even pet care. There are also service offerings for tutoring and housekeeping.

As a sign of its success, Care.com pulled off an IPO in late January and the stock was up about 42% on its first day of trading. But things have cooled off since then. CRCM stock is now only up about 20% since its offering.

The reason? The company posted a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter report. Although, the growth was still impressive. In the quarter, revenues shot up 41% to $22.5 million. Besides, other social stocks like LinkedIn and Facebook also had shaky reports for their first few quarters as public companies. It can take some time for Wall Street to make adjustments.

Going forward, there is lots of room on the upside, which should fuel CRCM stock. The addressable market is massive, considering that roughly 42 million households in the U.S. have enough income to afford caregiver services. There are also several strong trends that should help boost demand: the growth in dual-income and single-parent households, the aging population and the preference for home care.

Don’t miss out on these social stocks. Even if they’re not dominating the headlines, they’re still worth your attention.

Ukraine Crisis Drives the Markets

The crisis in the Ukraine has escalated to include the threat of armed combat, and the global markets reacted as expected yesterday, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, who cites some examples, along with offering his prediction as to how long this crisis may last.

Gold and energy commodities were up yesterday. So were safe haven currencies, such as the yen.

The Russian ruble was down. So was the euro and emerging market currencies, and markets took a licking.

Pretty much what you'd expect when the crisis in the Ukraine has escalated to include a threat of armed conflict between Russian and Ukrainian soldiers.

The biggest move was in the share prices of energy companies that might benefit if natural gas prices soar due to a cut-off in gas exports from Russia across the Ukraine, and into Western Europe.

For example, shares of Norwegian oil and gas producer Statoil (STO) were up 2.35% yesterday, as of 2:00 PM New York time.

Shares of energy companies without any near-term way to take advantage of any stoppage were off, with Chesapeake Energy (CHK) down 1.2% and France's Total (TOT) off 2.31%.

The oil benchmark price of the West Texas Intermediate climbed 1.77%. The Brent benchmark rose 1.6%.

Most of the moves I saw yesterday weren't specific to the crisis, but instead, were examples of the standard response of traders to heightened risk. For example, the safe haven yen rose to 101.4 to the US dollar. The euro was off 0.43% against the dollar. Gold was up 2.15%. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) was down 1.89%.

The ruble was the big crisis's specific loser, down 1.4% yesterday, against a basket of currencies—despite an increase in benchmark interest rates from the Russian central bank. That continued the Russian currency's slide in 2014. The ruble is now down more than 10% for 2014.

The slow response of US and EuroZone diplomats to the crisis, with lots of talking and not much action (not necessarily a bad thing if the alternative is shoot first and talk later), suggests that this crisis will drag on for a while. An "emergency" meeting of EuroZone leaders isn't scheduled to take place until Thursday, March 6.

Full disclosure: I don't own shares of any of the companies mentioned in this post in my personal portfolio. When in 2010 I started the mutual fund I manage, Jubak Global Equity Fund, I liquidated all my individual stock holdings and put the money into the fund. The fund may or may not now own positions in any stock mentioned in this post. The fund did own shares of Chesapeake Energy and Statoil as of the end of December. For a full list of the stocks in the fund see the fund's portfolio here.

Yellen: Steady Fed Policy Could Shift With ‘Notable’ Economic Change

Federal Reserve Board Chairwoman Janet Yellen told House lawmakers Tuesday in her prepared remarks that she expects “a great deal of continuity” in the Federal Open Market Committee’s approach to monetary policy.

However, Yellen conceded during the question and answer session with lawmakers that the Fed would pause its tapering of asset purchases if there was a “notable change” in the economic outlook, and increase asset purchases again if there were “a significant deterioration in the outlook — either for the job market or if inflation would not be moving back up over time.”

While receiving mostly congratulations from the lawmakers in taking her new post, Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, chairman of the committee, reminded Yellen of his committee’s yearlong examination of the Fed via its Federal Reserve Centennial Oversight Project. “Any agency or bureau of government that is 100 years old probably needs a good check-up, especially one as powerful as yours,” Hensarling said. “And I remind all, independence and accountability are not mutually exclusive concepts.”

In her first report on monetary policy, Yellen told members of the House Financial Services Committee Tuesday that  “If incoming information broadly supports the committee’s expectation of ongoing improvement in labor market conditions and inflation moving back toward its longer-run objective, the committee will likely reduce the pace of asset purchases in further measured steps at future meetings.”

She then took a line from her predecessor, Ben Bernanke, in his last speech by stating that “purchases are not on a preset course” and that “the committee’s decisions about their pace will remain contingent on its outlook for the labor market and inflation as well as its assessment of the likely efficacy and costs of such purchases.”

At his last press conference in early January, Bernanke said after the December FOMC meeting that further tapering will “be data dependent.” However, he said he anticipated that the Fed would “probably do a measured reduction” at each meeting in 2014.

Jim O'Sullivan, Chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, said that Yellen "expressed cautious optimism about growth, with no sign of concern about some of the weaker data recently while downplaying the volatility in markets."

Indeed, Axel Merk, president and CIO of Merk Investments LLC, noted in his Tuesday commentary that on Yellen's first day on the job, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 326 points; 10-year Treasury yields fell to 2.58%.

"While a day does not set a trend, let alone create a legacy, there is no honeymoon for Janet Yellen," Merk said. "Volatility, seemingly absent in 2013, is back, with major implications for investors’ portfolios."

While Yellen expressed disappointment with the past two jobs reports, she said that “we can’t jump to conclusions” about what those reports mean — noting that cold winter weather was likely a contributing factor. She added that the FOMC would look at a “broad range of data” at its March meeting to assess the significance of the jobs reports. “We’re not back to maximum employment,” Yellen said. “However, there has been substantial job creation. But we have further to go.”

The unemployment rate has fallen “nearly a percentage point since the middle of last year and 1-1/2 percentage points since the beginning of the current asset purchase program,” she said. It was 6.6% in January.

“Nevertheless, the recovery in the labor market is far from complete,” with the unemployment rate “still well above levels that FOMC participants estimate is consistent with maximum sustainable employment.”

Yellen summed up her remarks by stating: “Since the financial crisis and the depths of the recession, substantial progress has been made in restoring the economy to health and in strengthening the financial system. Still, there is more to do. Too many Americans remain unemployed, inflation remains below our longer-run objective, and the work of making the financial system more robust has not yet been completed.”

U.S. stocks in worst sell-off in a month

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — The U.S. stock market finished Monday sharply lower amid a global push into safe havens as political tensions in Ukraine and Russia over the Crimean peninsula escalated.

News of an armed invasion over the weekend overshadowed several better-than-expected economic reports in the U.S. The losses in the blue-chips and large-caps were the worst in a month when investors were worried about China and Turkey.

The S&P 500 index (SPX)  finished the day 14.02 points, or 0.8%, lower at 1,845.43, after closing at a record on Friday.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA)  was down as much as 250 points at session lows, but ended the day 153.68 points, or 0.9%, lower at 16,168.03.

Reuters Russian forces are massing at the Crimea border crossing.

The Nasdaq Composite (COMP)  lost 30.82 points, or 0.7%, to 4,277.30.

As escalating military tensions in Ukraine dominated news on Monday, better-than-expected economic reports did little to provide relief from broad-based selling.

"The most surprising thing is how little anyone can do about Russia's behavior in Crimea," said John Rutlege, chief investment strategist at Safanad.

"This is the time to tighten the risk and stay away from emerging markets," he added.

Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx Group, a global brokerage company based in New York described jittery markets as being back to 'old normal', with a lot more volatility than we grew accustomed to during the past year.

The implied volatility on the S&P 500 as measured by the CBOE Vix index jumped 14% to 16, last seen on Feb. 3, when markets sold off on fears over Turkey and China.

In economic news, consumers boosted spending in January, but a good chunk of the money went to pay higher utility bills during an unusually cold winter, according to government data released Monday.

The final reading of Markit's U.S. purchasing managers index accelerated in February, the economic information firm said Monday. The final reading for February was the highest level in almost four years. The report shows that output and new business picked up sharply.

U.S. manufacturers expanded at a faster pace in February and business would have been even better if not for severe winter weather, according to a survey of executives.

Lorillard, Inc (LO)  share jumped 9.3% on news reports in the Financial Times that Reynolds is exploring a possible deal with its smaller rival. Shares in Reynolds (RAI)   rallied 4.8%.

Providing Tax ‘Alpha’ to Your Clients: 21 Days of Tax Planning Advice

Most investment advisors focus exactly on that for their clients: providing and implementing investment advice. A focus on providing alpha beyond just buying index mutual funds or ETFs is fine, but advisors don’t control the markets. They also don’t control the Internal Revenue Service, but helping clients maximize their tax savings is one form of ‘alpha’ that you can provide your clients. For example, in a recent interview discussing Envestnet’s new Quantitative Portfolios, company chairman and CEO Jud Bergman suggested that providing highly tax-advantaged portfolios to clients can keep them from asking the question, “Why can’t I just buy these ETFs myself?”

Even if you aren’t a CPA or prepare tax filings for your clients, it’s important that you know enough about the federal tax code and what the tax court has ruled and how each state is treating, say, same-sex couples, to help guide your clients and make sure their tax preparer is up to speed. Beyond just maximizing deductions and exemptions and minimizing clients’ annual tax bills, many smart advisors also ask to see clients’ 1040s and accompanying schedules to get a more holistic view of those clients’ total financial picture (surprise; many clients have other advisors!).

There are always moves in Washington to reform the tax code. For example, Sen. Ron Wyden, chair of the Senate Finance Committee, has proposed a series of reforms, as has House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, but it’s unclear whether those plans will bear fruit this year, and past reforms have often made the IRC more unwieldy, not less. Will the current Congress cap the charitable tax deduction (unlikely)? Will 'carried interest' feel the wrath of the reformers? That's one of Camp's suggestions. We'll monitor the proposals, but for the moment, you've got enough on your tax planning plate.

U.S. Steel and AK Steel at Risk from Falling Steel Prices

Investors turned bullish on higher steel prices for U.S. producers in 2013, helping to spur stocks like US Steel (X) and AK Steel (AKS) higher during the latter half of the year. They might want to rethink that position this year.

Bloomberg

JPMorgan’s Michael Gambardella and team explain:

Specifically, we expected the combination of domestic capacity returning to the market at the time of weakening cost support from iron ore and coking coal would depress U.S. prices. In addition, scrap prices play a key factor in U.S. sheet steel markets given the prevalence of scrap-based mini-mills at roughly 33% market share. After a substantial rise through year end 2013, momentum appears to be fading based on weaker than expected January benchmarks and more importantly signs of stress in the country’s biggest scrap importer, Turkey. Lastly, the rapid rise in domestic prices increased U.S. premiums over Chinese steel prices to near record levels and we are beginning to see the first signs of the resulting increased import pressure on U.S. prices.

As a result, they reiterated their bearish view on US Steel and AK Steel, while stating their preference of Nucor (NUE) and Steel Dynamics (STLD) for their “variable cost structures and significant leverage to an eventual recovery in non-residential construction activity,” Gambardella says. UBS stated a similar preference earlier this month.

Shares of US Steel have gained 0.2% to $25.38 today, while AK Steel has dropped 2.9% to $6.07, Nucor has fallen 0.5% to $48.54 and Steel Dynamics has declined 1.8% to $16.66.
