Put Your Feet First

Q: How about codifying how to successfully match an outfit with patterned and/or colorful sock choices for men?

Cool socks have always been someone else's statement and I'd like a leg up on making successful choices!

A: Memo to all you fellows who finally got used to slipping your bare feet into driving loafers: You're behind the curve. The cutting edge now belongs to those geeky guys in their wild and crazy socks. Novelty socks are the technology set's version of Wall Street's graphic neckties and silly suspenders of the 1980s.

Forget the rules about coordinating your socks with your pants. Too contrived! Wear colorful socks with a sense of adventure and abandon.

That isn't to say that conventional dressers can't play ball here. Adopt the continental flair of Stefano Pilati, the former Yves Saint Laurent designer who wore tangerine socks (most probably cashmere) with gray flannel pants and a shawl collared sweater.

Study how Fred Astaire worked contrasting socks into his routine of loafers and his suede oxfords.

If you're more downtown to begin with—skinny jeans, cargoes, khakis and hoodies—then, go for the gusto of the wackier sock patterns.

But don't just fill your sock drawer with the loud argyles and souped-up stripes. Be authentic to your individual style. Get ideas from websites like joyofsocks.com and HappySocks.com—a Swedish brand that's popular with the techies.

After you've gotten your kicks with bolder patterns, join the sock party. It's becoming a popular pastime to snap images of your favorite socks under your desk and then tweet them out for friends and the world to see.
