Synthetic biology and renewable oils manufacturerSolazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) announced that it successfully conducted multiple initial fermentations in 500,000 liter fermentors in December 2012. While it was a big step forward in the right direction, I think the announcement was a bit premature. By "multiple," the company meant two and by "commercial scale production metrics," the company meant that only partial data had been collected. By reading SEC filings, investors can learn that the company has yet to prove microbial productivity at volumes greater than 128,000 liters. Not at all a nail in the coffin, but since the company believes it needs to reach 625,000 liter fermentors to be profitable, it is clear that engineers have plenty of work ahead of them.

Synthetic biology company and renewable oils manufacturer Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) reported earnings after the market closed on Wednesday. Investors worried about a quiet start to the year were reminded that the company remains occupied preparing its three commercial-scale facilities for operations and developing oil profiles. The waiting game isn't quite over for investors, but management announced one major event that should keep investors happy. Here is a recap of recent developments at Solazyme.

  • [By Maxx Chatsko]

You call it cheating -- I call it looking ahead
Who said biotech investments are confined to health care and pharmaceuticals? Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) has nothing to do with either, but forward-thinking investors won't let that stop them. The industrial biotechnology company is developing a novel renewable oils platform that could one day produce commercial quantities of in-spec chemicals for a variety of applications including cosmetics, flavors and fragrances, specialty chemicals, and fuels.

What: Shares of Solazyme (NASDAQ: SZYM  ) fell as much as 20% today after it agreed to dissolve a promising joint venture.

So what: Solazyme and Roquette, a starch and starch-derivatives company, agreed to dissolve a joint venture formed in 2010 to create alternative foods from microalgae. The companies couldn't decide on a manufacturing and marketing strategy so they decided to go their separate ways.

Top Energy Companies For 2014: Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp (KOG)

Kodiak Oil & Gas Corp. (Kodiak) is an independent energy company focused on the exploration, exploitation, acquisition and production of crude oil and natural gas in the United States. Kodiak has developed an oil and natural gas asset base of proved reserves, as well as a portfolio of development and exploratory drilling opportunities on high-potential prospects with an emphasis on oil resource plays. The Company oil and natural gas reserves and operations are primarily concentrated in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. As of January 31, 2012, it had approximately 169,000 net acres under lease, including 157,000 net acres in the Bakken oil play in the Williston Basin of North Dakota and Montana. In January 2012, the Company acquired Williston Basin oil and gas producing properties and undeveloped leasehold. On January 10, 2012, it acquired certain oil and gas leaseholds, overriding royalty interests and producing properties located in North Dakota. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

    It's not easy being big
When most people think about the energy boom, they tend to focus on the small exploration and production companies that have gone from being unknown players in the industry to well-known names focusing on key geographical areas with huge production potential. For instance, the Bakken play in North Dakota has turned the state into the highest-growth area in the nation, and Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) and several other tiny exploration and production companies have ridden the wave of success in boosting their production levels and reaping the Bakken's benefits. Kodiak in particular has leveraged its future success to the Bakken, with plans to spend all of its capital budget in the region.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

If the souring of the Bakken becomes more widespread it could have a big impact on the profitability of higher-cost producers like Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) . Because it costs the company $10 million on average to drill a well, its rates of return are already lower than its peers in the $8 million per well range. Additional costs from hydrogen sulfide mitigation equipment or special pipelines will slow growth and crimp profits.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

On the other end of the spectrum, Kodiak Oil & Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) spends about $10 million to drill its Bakken wells. The math in getting well costs down is pretty compelling. At the current cost to drill a well, Kodiak will drill about 75 wells this year; however, if it was able to cut its costs closer to Continental's levels the company could drill more than a dozen additional wells. For Magnum Hunter this means it needs to keep its well costs under control so that it can stretch its limited capital resources as far as possible.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

It costs upwards of $10 million for a small oil and gas producer to drill one Bakken well -- something that Kodiak Oil and Gas (NYSE: KOG  ) knows well. One of the major risks Kodiak faces is that oil prices slip below $70 a barrel, which is the an estimated level where wells become uneconomical. Meanwhile companies operating in the Canadian oil sands need oil prices to be in the $45-$70 range to break even. If oil had remained below those levels, ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM  ) would never have sanctioned its Kearl oil sands project, which, after cost overuns, will end up costing the company $12.9 billion to complete.

Moreover, highly speculative miners have also done badly.
